State treatments assume an eligible licensed-dealer purchase, a qualifying same-transaction trade-in, and an immediate manufacturer rebate. Manual selections apply only in Manual mode. Enter the applicable rate and fees; local surtax caps, taxable dealer fees, registration and special exemptions are not automatically determined. Michigan uses its purchase-year trade credit cap; outstanding trade debt affects financing, not tax credit. Rules reviewed October 19, 2026; complete state coverage and original dropdown parity remain unverified.

How to use this calculator
Include down payment, trade equity, sales tax, incentives, and financed fees. Enter amounts in the units shown, select the applicable options, and click Calculate. Use Reset to restore the starting values.
Calculation formula
Financed amount = vehicle price − incentives − down payment − trade value + trade debt + financed taxes and fees.
Assumptions and accuracy
Review timing, rates, fees and result notes when comparing scenarios. Future returns and rates are assumptions rather than guaranteed outcomes. Monetary display follows the currency’s precision; intermediate calculations retain additional digits.

Open this calculationUnderstanding this calculation
A car payment estimate depends on the amount financed, interest rate, loan length, trade-in, rebates and entered taxes and fees. Compare total cost as well as monthly payment.
Reading your result
- Sales tax
- Tax calculated from the entered rate and selected purchase-tax treatment; special local rules may be missing.
- Payment per period
- The modeled installment on the financed balance; a longer term can lower it without lowering total interest.
- Total payments
- Loan installments over the schedule; it is not a complete ownership-cost total including fuel, maintenance and insurance.
Compare two scenarios
- Use the same vehicle price, trade-in, down payment and taxes for both financing offers.
- Change the rate or term independently, then compare total interest and required upfront cash.
Check before comparing
- Outstanding trade-in debt is separate from the trade-in value.
- Check whether taxes and fees are financed or paid upfront.
- A payment quote that includes optional warranties is not directly comparable unless those costs are entered.

Worked examples
Monthly car payment after a down payment
Illustrative inputs are specified in the steps below; the example link loads the complete settings. Unmentioned settings use the linked defaults.
- With no trade, rebate, tax or fees, financed principal is 20,000 − 5,000 = 15,000. At zero interest over 60 months, payment is 250.
Payment per period: 250 USD.
Try these inputsMonthly repayment with a 12% nominal annual rate
Principal 15,000 USD; 60 monthly payments; 12% nominal annual rate with monthly compounding. Fees and taxes are zero in this scenario.
- Monthly rate = 12% / 12 = 1%.
- Payment = 15000 × 0.01 / (1 − 1.01^(−60)).
- Check both the installment and the schedule; the final installment may be limited to the remaining balance.
Payment per period: 333.67 USD.
Try these inputsCompare a car down payment at zero interest
Vehicle price $12,000, down payment $2,000, ten monthly payments and zero interest; tax, trade-in, rebate and fees zero.
- Amount financed = 12000 − 2000 = 10000.
- Each payment = 10000 ÷ 10 = 1000.
- Ten payments total $10,000; the separate $2,000 down payment makes $12,000 before other ownership costs.
The monthly payment is $1,000 and loan interest is zero.
Try these inputsCommon questions
How does negative trade-in equity affect my car loan?
When the debt owed exceeds trade value, the shortfall can increase the new financed balance rather than acting like a down payment.
Does a trade-in always reduce sales tax?
No. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and transaction details. Use the applicable tax treatment instead of assuming a universal credit.
Scope and assumptions
Manual tax inputs and available rule presets are estimates. Registration charges, contract-specific rebates and actual lender terms need verification.
