How to use this calculator
Estimate future tuition and the monthly saving needed before college starts. Enter amounts in the units shown, select the applicable options, and click Calculate. Use Reset to restore the starting values.
Calculation formula
Discount future annual college costs to enrollment, then solve the savings contribution required.
Assumptions and accuracy
Review timing, rates, fees and result notes when comparing scenarios. Future returns and rates are assumptions rather than guaranteed outcomes. Monetary display follows the currency’s precision; intermediate calculations retain additional digits.

College savings calculator with tuition inflation
Estimate future college costs and a savings plan using entered tuition growth, time to enrollment and investment assumptions. Costs and returns are projections.

Project future college costs and estimate savings needed before enrollment. Tuition increases and investment returns are separate assumptions with different effects.
Worked examples
Plan for four years of constant college costs
Illustrative inputs are specified in the steps below; the example link loads the complete settings. Unmentioned settings use the linked defaults.
- Four annual costs of 10,000 total 40,000 when tuition growth is zero. With no existing savings or investment return, reaching that total over ten years requires 40,000 / 120 = 333.33 monthly.
Total projected college costs: 40,000 USD.
Try these inputsCommon questions
Does the college cost input cover all years?
It is the annual cost used with the duration setting. Entering a four-year total as an annual amount would overstate the target.
Why does tuition growth raise the savings target?
Each later tuition payment can cost more than today's price. Investment growth may help savings but is a separate uncertain assumption.
Scope and assumptions
Coverage is a user-selected share of modeled costs. Aid, scholarships, education-account tax rules and uncertain investment returns are not automatically determined.
