Investment Fee Calculator
Estimate investment fee impact, expense ratio costs and financial advisor fees, or compare two fee structures.
Estimate expense-ratio and advisor-fee costs and their long-term effect on your balance.
Result
Modeled fees paid are direct deductions. The balance reduction also includes lost growth, so these amounts should not be added together.
Annual model: returns apply to the opening balance, fund fees (if not already in return) then advisor fees are charged on post-growth assets; the contribution is deposited at year end. Published fund returns often already include the expense ratio: choose After fund fees to avoid deducting it twice. This simplified annual deduction differs from daily fund accrual.
The comparison keeps the same entered return and contributions. For After fund fees, fund fees are not deducted again and different funds require comparable net-return assumptions. Reported total fees exclude fund fees already embedded in a net return. No tax, loads, trading fees or fee tiers are modeled.

How to use this calculator
Estimate expense-ratio and advisor-fee costs and their long-term effect on your balance. Enter amounts in the units shown, select the applicable options, and click Calculate. Use Reset to restore the starting values.
Calculation formula
Balance = opening × (1 + return) × (1 − applicable fund fee) × (1 − advisor fee) + year-end deposit.
Assumptions and accuracy
Review timing, rates, fees and result notes when comparing scenarios. Future returns and rates are assumptions rather than guaranteed outcomes. Monetary display follows the currency’s precision; intermediate calculations retain additional digits.

Worked examples
One year of a 1% advisor fee
balance: 10000; deposit: 0; years: 1; rate: 10; basis: Before fund fees; fund: 0; advisor: 1
- Growth produces 10,000 × 1.10 = 11,000.
- Advisor fee = 11,000 × 1% = 110; ending balance = 10,890.
Ending balance after modeled fees: 10,890
Try these inputsFund fees already in the quoted return
balance: 10000; deposit: 0; years: 1; rate: 10; basis: After fund fees; fund: 1; advisor: 0
- The entered 10% return is already net of the fund expense ratio.
- Do not subtract the fund fee again: 10,000 × 1.10 = 11,000.
Ending balance after modeled fees: 11,000
Try these inputsCommon questions
Are expense ratios already included in fund returns?
Published mutual fund and ETF returns often already reflect fund operating expenses. Check the return definition and choose After fund fees when appropriate. The tool then applies only the separately entered advisor fee.
How much do investment fees cost over time?
Modeled fees paid sum the explicit annual deductions. Balance reduction also includes lost future growth, so it is a different measure. Fees embedded in an already-net return cannot be separately recovered from that return alone.
Can I use this as a financial advisor fee calculator?
Yes, for a constant annual percentage of post-growth assets. It does not model flat retainers, tiered fees, quarterly billing or tax deductions. Option A and B use the same return assumption, not predictions of different funds.
Scope and assumptions
Annual returns and percentage fees stay constant. Fund fees, when applicable, are deducted after growth, then advisor fees, then the year-end contribution. Fund returns already net of expenses must use After fund fees. No tax, fee tiers, loads, transaction costs or daily accrual are modeled.
