Markup is 50.0000% of cost; profit margin is 33.3333% of selling price. They describe the same gross profit using different denominators.

Markup divides gross profit by cost; margin divides gross profit by selling price. These results exclude sales tax, overhead and other costs unless included in your cost input. A negative markup represents selling below cost.

Calculation formula

Price = cost × (1 + markup); margin = markup / (1 + markup).

Worked examples

Cost 100 with 50% markup

cost: 100; markup: 50

  1. Markup amount = 100 × 50% = 50.
  2. Price = 100 + 50 = 150; margin = 50 / 150 = 33.33%.

Selling price: 150

Try these inputs

Price from a 25% margin

cost: 75; margin: 25

  1. Divide cost by 1 − margin.
  2. 75 / 0.75 = 100, with gross profit of 25.

Selling price: 100

Try these inputs

Convert a 25% margin to markup

Margin: 25%; direction: Margin to markup.

  1. Divide 0.25 by 1 − 0.25.
  2. 0.25 / 0.75 = 0.333333, or 33.3333% markup.

The equivalent markup is 33.3333%.

Common questions

What is markup vs margin?

Markup = (price − cost) / cost; margin = (price − cost) / price. A 50% markup equals a 33.33% margin. Convert markup to margin with markup/(1+markup), or margin to markup with margin/(1−margin), using decimal rates.

How does reverse markup work?

Divide selling price by 1 + markup. At a price of 150 and 50% markup, cost is 150/1.5 = 100. Do not subtract 50% of the selling price.

Can I use this for retail or wholesale pricing?

Yes. The arithmetic is the same; enter a cost basis covering the costs you intend to recover. The tool does not recommend a markup or infer market demand.

Scope and assumptions

Use a consistent per-unit cost basis. Cost and selling price must be positive, markup must exceed −100%, and a target margin must be below 100%. This gross-profit model excludes sales tax and overhead unless you include them in cost; it does not calculate net business profit.
